Open Metaverse

A shared vision of interoperable virtual worlds where users can carry identities, assets, and creations across platforms.

The Open Metaverse is the idea of a network of virtual spaces, games, social apps, and digital economies that are not controlled by one company and can work together through common standards. In crypto, it often refers to metaverse environments that use blockchains, NFTs, decentralized identity, and open protocols so users can own digital items, prove authenticity, and potentially move assets or reputation between compatible platforms.

It matters because today many online worlds are closed: an avatar skin or in-game item usually stays inside one app. An open metaverse aims to make digital ownership and identity more portable, more like using the same email address or crypto wallet across many services. For example, a user might buy a wearable NFT in one virtual world and display it in another that supports the same asset standard. Full interoperability is difficult and depends on technical, legal, and design choices, so the term is best understood as a goal and ecosystem approach rather than a single product.
