Metaverse
A metaverse is a shared digital environment where people use avatars to socialize, play, create, and trade virtual goods or experiences.
In crypto, the metaverse usually refers to persistent online worlds where users interact through avatars and digital objects can be owned, transferred, or sold using blockchain-based tools. These worlds may include games, social spaces, virtual land, events, marketplaces, and creator economies. Blockchains are often used to record ownership of items such as wearables, collectibles, access passes, or parcels of virtual land, commonly through tokens or NFTs.
The metaverse matters because it connects digital identity, online communities, and virtual commerce in one environment. For example, a user might buy a digital jacket for an avatar, attend a virtual concert, or build a storefront on a virtual plot of land. A simple comparison is an online game or social platform, but with stronger emphasis on user-owned assets and open marketplaces. Not every metaverse project needs crypto, and blockchain ownership does not guarantee value or long-term usefulness.
