What happened
WEMIX, the blockchain arm of the South Korean games publisher Wemade, lost control of its WEMIX$ stablecoin contract on 26 July 2026. An attacker obtained owner privileges over the contract and minted roughly 5.23 million tokens that nothing backed.
Part of the newly created supply was then sold into the ecosystem's own liquidity, converting to about 30,736 WEMIX and roughly 724,000 USDC.e. The USDC.e was bridged out of WEMIX3.0 to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, swapped into other liquid assets and split across several wallets. WEMIX shut down its bridges, froze the affected liquidity pools and asked exchanges to freeze related assets.
Two figures circulate and they measure different things. The $6.25 million widely reported is the value of the tokens minted; WEMIX itself says about $724,000 was actually bridged out of the ecosystem. The rest was either recovered through the freeze or never left in a realisable form. Both bounds are recorded here rather than choosing one, because the gap between them is the whole story of how much this cost.
This was the second significant breach of WEMIX in eighteen months. No attribution has been established.
