Private Key

A private key is a secret cryptographic code that proves ownership and authorizes transactions from a crypto wallet.

A private key is a secret piece of data used in cryptography to control access to cryptocurrency. It is usually a very large random number, often shown to users through a wallet’s seed phrase rather than directly. From a private key, a wallet can generate public addresses that others can send funds to, but the private key itself must stay hidden. Anyone who has it can create valid digital signatures and move the assets linked to those addresses.

Private keys matter because blockchains do not use passwords, account recovery teams, or chargebacks in the usual way. When you approve a transaction, your wallet uses the private key to sign it, proving to the network that the transaction is authorized without revealing the key. A helpful comparison is a house key: your public address is like a mailbox where people can deliver funds, while your private key is what unlocks control over them. Losing it can mean losing access permanently, and sharing it can allow theft.
