Pectra Upgrade
An Ethereum network upgrade that improves wallets, validator operations, and data capacity by updating both the execution and consensus layers.
The Pectra Upgrade is a major Ethereum network upgrade that combines changes to Ethereum’s execution layer, where transactions and smart contracts run, and its consensus layer, where validators secure the chain. Its name comes from two coordinated upgrade tracks: Prague for the execution layer and Electra for the consensus layer. Pectra introduces a package of Ethereum Improvement Proposals aimed at making the network easier to use and operate, rather than changing Ethereum’s basic purpose.
One of its best-known changes helps regular externally owned accounts behave more like smart contract wallets for certain actions, which can support features such as transaction batching, sponsored gas, or improved recovery flows. Pectra also improves validator management, including more flexible staking operations and higher effective balance limits for validators, which can reduce operational complexity for large stakers. A practical comparison is that Pectra is less like launching a new app and more like updating Ethereum’s underlying operating system: most users may not notice every change directly, but wallet providers, staking services, and developers can build smoother experiences on top of it.
Other terms in Ethereum
Account Abstraction (ERC-4337)
A way for Ethereum wallets to act like smart contracts, enabling features such as gas sponsorship, account recovery, and custom transaction rules.
Beacon Chain
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake coordination layer that organizes validators and finalizes blocks for the network.
EIP
An Ethereum Improvement Proposal is a formal document used to suggest, discuss, and standardize changes to the Ethereum network or ecosystem.
ERC-1155
An Ethereum token standard that lets one smart contract create and manage multiple token types, including fungible tokens, NFTs, and semi-fungible items.
