Asset-Backed Token

A digital token whose value is linked to an underlying asset, such as cash, gold, real estate, or other real-world collateral.

An asset-backed token is a crypto token that represents a claim on, or economic exposure to, an underlying asset held off-chain or on-chain. The backing asset may be fiat currency, commodities like gold, government bonds, real estate, invoices, or other real-world assets. The token is usually issued by an entity that custodies the asset, records ownership, and defines redemption or transfer rules. In the RWA category, these tokens are used to bring traditional assets onto blockchain networks in a programmable form.

Asset-backed tokens matter because they can make assets easier to transfer, settle, divide into smaller units, or use in decentralized finance applications. For example, a gold-backed token may represent a specific amount of gold held in a vault, allowing users to trade gold exposure without moving the physical metal. Their reliability depends on the quality of custody, audits, legal rights, and whether holders can redeem tokens for the underlying asset. They are different from purely algorithmic tokens because their value is intended to be supported by identifiable collateral.
